Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough
That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.
Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals
With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
