Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
