Robert and Christina share their experiences of student life.

One university attendee spent most of his first week at university looking at social media, reading posts about fellow students partying.

"I stayed indoors," Robert explains, depicting those days as the most isolated period of his life.

The people he lived with rarely went out, and his studies didn't appear very sociable.

Despite putting himself out there by attending trial events for various societies, he was unable to locate his people.

"I started to lose my confidence," he says. "I felt like people didn't want to be friends with me, or they weren't fond of me."

Social Media Comparisons

Initially, Robert wasn't considering of studying at university and was offered positions for after sixth form.

However he saw his friends living it up as university attendees on social media.

"When you've got to get up for work on Thursday at 9:00 and you observe peers partied on the previous evening, you begin believing the grass is greener," Robert explains.

College Anticipations

Media content and online platforms can glorify the idea of student life.

Numerous students begin university with strong assumptions for what they think could be the most wonderful time of their lives.

Certain attendees come to university with "rose-tinted glasses," notes a counselling manager.

Research Results

  • In a poll of first-year attendees early on, the main anxiety was fitting in and finding acceptance
  • Additional research conducted by analysts, nearly one-fifth of attendees said they lacked friendships at university
  • A substantial portion mentioned they felt anxious regularly about making friends

Individual Stories

Another student's online videos was full of videos of students enjoying themselves while living together in student houses.

Yet when Alisha moved from her hometown to university to pursue media studies, she found orientation period "daunting" because of the drinking culture it involved.

Alisha doesn't drink and had avoided party scenes before.

"I utilized much of orientation in my room," she says. "I just felt somewhat isolated."

Mental Health Considerations

According to recent research of over ten thousand college learners, 29% said they had considered dropping out.

The primary factor was psychological wellbeing, succeeded by monetary worries.

"Concern over these multiple factors is massively common, and normal," explains a support specialist.

Discovering Answers

Over periods, the students all found their feet and formed relationships.

She built connections through her course and via social media, while another student became more content after being able to move in with friends.

Useful Suggestions

In his case, currently in his mid-twenties and in his last year, it was joining his university's drama society and working occasionally that supported social connection.

Robert's advice to beginning learners struggling to socialize is to venture outside your living space and participate in group trial sessions.

"Subsequent to periods of regular attendance, people recognise your face," he explains, "you recognise theirs, and relationships start developing."
