Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of undesired gifts can be seen as somewhat rude – unless it's done for a noble purpose.

A Charitable Sale

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders while abroad. The diverse haul could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to sold via competitive bidding by a Rome-based auction firm. The specific date has not been finalized, but the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the revenue going to various charities.

Storage Room Holdings

The items are said to be stored in a repository on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni is also intending to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been stored away for years.

The full gift list has not yet been officially released, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was presented in parliament. The query raised whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents worth more than €300.

A Global Assortment of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, mostly from within her party, with building relationships with international counterparts and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.

This charitable initiative highlights a unconventional way to manage the state presents that accumulate during a political career.
